September 10, 2007 - Emotions
Emotions are such a deep seated part of our lives. Just yesterday as I was preaching about emotions I again realized that they can be used by each of us for good or for bad. As you read through the accounts of the Kings of Israel and Judah their emotional response is apparent. When they choose to walk with God, doing His will and following His commands the Lord blesses them and their emotional response is positive. Yet the ones that choose to follow after other gods, to build high places to express their devotion to the demonic gods who hate what God loves, who steal, kill and destroy, their emotional responses to God’s calling them back are negative. The same emotions that one King uses to praise God, another uses to dismiss God.
We can be the same way today. So many people become angry with God because God hasn’t done what they think He should be doing for their lives. Never seeing this as a selfish reaction to their circumstances, they turn in disgust and walk away spiritually, blaming God for the situations that have come into their lives, often by their own choosing. When people are offended by what someone says or does, their emotions take over and they react in a way that does not reflect the image of God in them. Jesus so often was spoken of harshly, was put down by angry religious leaders and had people turn their back on Him and walk away. Yet His choice after all these emotional reactions and responses was to demonstrate His love for each person by willingly dying for them. One of the heart stopping verses in all of scripture is John 3:16 – “God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Take a minute to reread that verse. It describes what true love is all about.
