October 8, 2007 - Does the Church really want Revival?
The Church of Jesus Christ throughout the world, our nation and our state has been crying out to God for revival. Across denominational lines intercessors continue to ask God to bring revival. Many are not sure what they are asking for. Revival means to revive or bring back to life something that is dying or dead. For that to happen in the church Holy Spirit will come in power and radically transform people’s lives. There in lies the issue for the Church though, the people’s lives that will be transformed are thought to be those in the world who don’t know Jesus as Lord. But that is not revival, it is an Awakening. People continue to use words that mean one thing and think because they understand it differently the meaning is what they understand or want it to be.
Revival will come when God so moves among His people, those who already call Jesus their Lord and Savior, not those in the world who do not know Jesus. Chuck Swindoll a number of years ago said that people who don’t know Jesus will act like they don’t know Him and we should not expect anything different than that. The problem is that God’s people are not acting like they know Jesus. The direction of so many in the church, not just Church leaders, but the people who are the body of Christ are so willing to compromise what the Bible teaches, what Holy Spirit is telling them to do by guiding and leading them, that those who are called the people of God are so easily fit into a picture with everyone else who does not know God. Perhaps that’s because they don’t know God. It has long been said that just because someone goes to church doesn’t mean they know God, just like standing in a garage doesn’t make you a car.
Revival will come when God’s people read and quote 2 Chronicles 7:14 with an understanding that God was talking about His people, not other people. And sadly, that His people today have similar problems to His people in the context of 2 Chronicles 7:14. Remember it says: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and turn from their evil ways, then I will heal their land.” It is about us, His people, so many of who must see that our lives are not being lived holy, set apart for God. The statistics are staggering. So many call Jesus “Lord, Lord” yet neither know Him nor are known by Him according to Matthew 7:20-23.
