November 13, 2007 - Slow it down a little...
Here we are going into the busy time of the year for most people and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. This past weekend I was over on the East side of the state and Bonnie pointed out to me that there’s a different speed to life on the other side of the mountains. It’s a little slower. Then it came to me, maybe it isn’t so much the speed of life as the choice of people to try to do so much in the same amount of time. After all, those who live in Eastern Washington have the same amount of time as those who live in Western Washington. It’s just that they choose to use it differently.
So with that thought in mind, what say ye to slowing down a little this holiday season? Let’s do what needs to be done, but let’s try doing it a little slower? Say at 55 mph instead of our traditional Christmas 85mph. Take some time to sit and just enjoy that cup of coffee, tea, steamed Egg Nog – or whatever it is that you tend to gulp down instead of sip on. I have this theory, if we slow down, maybe, and it’s just a maybe, we will hear God better, flow in Holy Spirit easier and be more like Jesus. At least that first Christmas when He was born, He didn’t do much of anything if you think about it.
I for one recognize my inability to slow down without someone reminding me. It’s why the Lord has been getting me up during the middle of the night to talk to me. Too many things to do, too many people who need something, too much preparation to fit everything into one day. I know you can relate, so many of us seem to move a portion of today’s list to tomorrow. But you know what, this Holiday Season, starting this week as we prepare to head into the Thanksgiving week – try to slow it down a little. Walk slower instead of walking briskly (after all most of us aren’t walking for exercise, just to get somewhere). Give yourself a little extra time to get where you’re going ahead of time so you can just sit and take 3 deep breaths. Seems like there’s a verse in Isaiah that talks about waiting on the Lord, this would be a good time to slow it down – and I know you agree.
