May 15, 2007 - Is the apostolic important enough to talk about?
I am so excited about Joe and Pam McIntyre coming to Village Chapel this week to speak to our body about the restoration of the Apostolic. What is the apostolic you ask? It’s the first of the five offices Jesus gave to the church in order to equip or train the church to do ministry. It is here until we all attain to the unity of the faith, till we all come to the place where we are in agreement or in unity regarding our faith.
So what you ask, so what does this mean, so what do I care? It’s important to realize that although for many decades, some would say hundreds of years, most Apostles of Jesus Christ have gone unrecognized. Especially here in the United States because we don’t like authority figures over us. “WHAT DID YOU SAY?” Yes I said it, go back and read it again if you’d like, but at the heart of our unwillingness even today is the concept that we simply don’t want people to tell us what to do, especially not with the authority of Jesus Christ behind them. That implies, no let’s be straight up, that makes their guidance – when prayed over and led by Holy Spirit – important to the Church of Jesus Christ.
Some denominations have taken a very strong stand against Apostles, just as some denominations used to feel about the title “Elder” and “Prophet”. There are some people today who insist the word “Pastor” is not in the Bible and should be read as “Shepherd” instead. At the heart of all that type of conflict is the simple fact that people don’t want anyone to have authority over them. Oh sure, we pass it off as no human authority, only Jesus – but God’s appointed authority comes from Jesus, so that in itself is not a legitimate reason to reject Apostles. Why are they so important? Because Jesus gave them to the church to train up His church to do the ministry by advancing His Kingdom. If they were not important, why on earth would Jesus have given them to the church?
Having said all that, I am so glad Jesus gave us people He speaks to who are leaders in the war against the gates of Hades, who are advancing the Kingdom of God. There is so much more that could be said about their role in God’s Kingdom plan, like . . . they are often strategists, they give direction to prophets, they bring together church leaders to work together in advancing the Kingdom and they are appointed by God. How do you know if someone is an Apostle? The one verse that stands out above the rest is 2 Cor 12:12. Read it, then ask God to give you direction regarding who these people are and how you should respond to Ephesians 4:11-13. Because if you are part of the restoration of the Apostolic, then you will be an apostolic person, not necessarily an apostle, a person who may be part of a church that is an apostolic church. But that’s a whole ‘nother blog, because apostolic churches have a different mindset, a Kingdom mindset, not just a pastoral or “church” mindset.
Back to blog list.
