April 19, 2007 - If Prayer Is So Important...

Talking with a good friend is one of the enjoyable parts of life. Being open and able to share whatever is on your heart, knowing this friend is trustworthy and that your confidence in their love and acceptance allows your time together to be encouraging and to be refreshing.  And so it is with God.  One of the most refreshing parts of my day is my time alone with God, even my time with God while including others in our conversation, or being included in their conversation with God.  I love to talk with my wife about our day, about what is happening spiritually in our lives and the ministry we are involved with and to pray with her.

I am saddened and surprised by how little time “believers” in Jesus spend talking with God on a daily basis.  For men it’s often an issue of allowing their thoughts to actually think they don’t have the time to talk with God.  There is a theological term for this mindset: hogwash.  We men have been trained to think that we are responsible to do things, to make things happen in our lives and in the lives of those we love.  So rather than ask God to move, trust Him to act and believe that He is concerned about the things that concern us, we try to make life happen around us.  We as men fail to trust God enough to simply talk with Him. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it’s not my intent to make men feel guilty, if you do it’s the conviction of Holy Spirit in your life that is at work, or maybe – just maybe, no one has ever taken the time to teach you how to pray, to talk with you about the importance of talking with God: could be as simple as that I suppose.  But a lot of the time, we would have to admit we just don’t make the time, or even think about God helping us.  It’s like the man who knows what is right to do, but just doesn’t do it.

Women on the other hand enjoy conversations with friends.  They like to share their thoughts with each other, knowing that someone is listening to what they are thinking.  Often, I am told, it’s not that they are looking for answers to their thoughts and questions, it’s more that they like to know someone listens to them.  Yet, the God of the universe would love to listen to them, to engage in conversation with a woman.  Sadly though, most are more willing to talk with another woman, even a man, than talk and share with their Creator.  I’m told that women are better conversationalists than are men, that they use more words in their communicating than men do.  So it begs the question, why not share and then listen to what the Lord has to say to your issues.  Is it that they would rather share their thoughts than find solutions?  I don’t know, I’m only repeating what other women have shared with me.

Either way, the bottom line for me today is that we all, men and women, boys and girls, need to talk with God more, much more than we do.  The most powerful tool and weapon we have for our spiritual lives, the lives of others and the advancing of God’s Kingdom is PRAYER!  So once again, I call on us to remember that if we want to see God move, our lives improve and great hope to come.  Then it’s time to get down on our knees, yes the posture of kneeling before God often moves the conversation along much more quickly, and it’s time to pray more.  However much you pray, I pray, we need to kick it up a notch and pray more.  But remember one very important element of prayer: listening to God. Don’t do all the talking, do more listening and watching while you pray.  After all, it was our Lord Jesus who told His disciples to “watch and pray”.   Just some thoughts.
